In “Midway Blitz” Wake, Broadview Mayor Elected to the National League of Cities Governing Board

(Broadview, IL) - The National League of Cities’ membership elected Village of Broadview Mayor Katrina Thompson to the NLC Board of Directors during the organization’s 2025 City Summit in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Thompson, who has been thrust into the national spotlight over protests over a federal ICE immigration processing and de facto detention center located in Broadview during the Trump Administration’s “Midway Blitz” operation, was elected to a 2-year term.

“Serving on the NLC Board of Directors matters to me because it gives communities like Broadview a real voice at the national table, and Broadview’s voice has become a whole lot louder nationally since the Trump Administration’s Midway Blitz immigration operation began,” said Thompson. “Local government is where policy meets people and where it, at times, collides against the most salient national issues and leaders of the day, and I speak from experience here. So, local governments must assure that the interests of its working-class residents, and in our case, predominantly African-American residents, are not overlooked.”

As the largest and most representative organization for cities, the NLC’s elected leaders and municipal staff advocate for local government priorities in Washington by building strong federal-local partnerships.

NLC Board members are selected by a 15-member nominating committee and are confirmed by a vote from NLC’s membership at the organization’s annual business meeting held in November. As a member of the board, Thompson will meet in March, June and November to guide NLC’s strategic direction.

“The Board of Directors creates the vision and direction for our more than 19,000 cities, towns and villages,” said National League of Cities President Kevin Kramer, Councilmember, Louisville, Kentucky. “I am ready to dive into the details with this extraordinary group of local leaders as we support strong and thriving communities across America.”

More than 3,000 mayors, councilmembers and other delegates from nearly every state, and the District of Columbia, convened in Salt Lake City, Utah, for NLC’s annual City Summit
