Dear Residents and Business Stakeholders,

Good afternoon. I am writing to provide you with important updates regarding ICE activities on
Beach Street.

We have been informed that approximately 2,000 demonstrators may arrive tomorrow. As your
mayor, I want to ensure that you have clear, accurate information about this situation.

First, the ICE detention facility located in Broadview should not be referred to as the Broadview
ICE Center. It is a Federal ICE Detention Center, owned and operated by the federal government.
The Village of Broadview does not receive any financial benefit from this facility. ICE employees
are not residents of our community, and detainees are not processed through the Broadview Police
Department. All actions are handled entirely by the federal government.

Second, I want to be clear: the Broadview Police Department did not attack demonstrators.
Actions taken during protests were by federal ICE agents, not by our local officers.
Broadview is a community of 8,000 people. Our police department, along with our fire, public
works, serve as first responders for residents and demonstrators alike. They are committed to doing
so to the best of their ability, even with limited resources. I am extremely proud of their service, and
I encourage you to thank them whenever you see them.

As a community, I ask that you help tell our story. Please share with your family and friends that
the facility in Broadview is a federal processing center, not a local one. It is important that we all
use the correct language so the truth is understood.

We will also be providing resources to help you know your rights. This information will be posted
on the Village website, shared by email, and available in hard copy at Village offices.

We may be a small town, but we are a strong and resilient community. Together, we will get
through this. If you have any questions, please contact the Broadview Police Department or my
office directly.

Lastly, I want to emphasize that while Broadview will always respect and uphold the Illinois
[rust Act and protect your constitutional First Amendment rights, we ask that demonstration
remain peaceful and that confrontations with federal agents be avoided. I do not support the us‹
of physical force or tear gas by federal agents against peaceful demonstrators, and we must call
out such unwarranted escalation when it occurs. Violence is not the answer.

Let us continue to stand together, spread love, and show kindness.

We are Broadview Strong.

With Gratitude,

Katrina R. Thompson
